Hey friend, This week flew by, which is a sign that it was eventful. Writing a weekly newsletter is an amazing life hack, it forces reflection, daily attention, connection, and improves your writing. That's 4 birds, with one stone. If you want help launching your own newsletter hit reply~
🔥 Highlights
- I created my own 'radio' show with this newsletter's name on capiche.fm. If you'd like to be a co-host, be interviewed, or just chill I'd love to chat with you. Capiche.fm is like a podcast, but unedited and via the phone. Listeners can even ask questions or join the conversation live. The founders are on point too, they retweeted me, emailed me, and even texted me, all just to offer their help. This attention from the creators, had a weirdly positive effect on my motivation to use their product.
- My girlfriend gave me an 8' putting green with ball return as a present and I've been obsessed with it. Every spare moment in the day I mindlessly sink some long putts. I suggest you have some micro-activity like this that takes your mind off things.
- I've been aware of Roam Research (a note-taking app for networked thought) since it first launched, yet barely touched it. But I'm finally giving it a chance, having realized the power of it. I've primarily been a pen and paper guy, but the potential for connecting and generating ideas based off your own notes is very exciting.
💔 Lowlights- I received a sad email from Amazon Prime that notified me my $59/yr membership was going to be renewed at the full $119.00/year price. I was getting crazy value at less than $59/mo for the past 4 years with my .edu email address...
- I played around with the idea of starting some job boards but didn't really ship anything along these lines. One for '4 day work week' jobs and another for 'Profit sharing' roles only. I could see both niches growing in the future. Especially when it becomes harder to convince employees to work so long for so little of the upside. Let me know if you end up trying this out!
🎯 Goals- I'd like to utilize my Rescuetime subscription better. I paid for the pro version, but I still need to categorize productive and unproductive activities for more meaningful reports.
- I started a book on leanpub about Hackathons, so my goal is to crank out at least a page a week moving forward. This is a topic near and dear to me, as I'm a huge fan of them and a self-proclaimed aficionado. I hope to cover some of the lessons I've learned having competed in over a dozen in the past 3 years.
- I've joined a telegram book club, been discussing books on twitter, and subscribed to Alex & Books newsletter. I've always been good about reading books, but rather horrible at turning that into something. I believe discussing and summarizing are how you make the book's key ideas your own and actually reap that fruit.
🔗 Link "The 30 Best Pieces of Advice for Entrepreneurs in 2020" by Firstround Capital. Long and dense, just like how I like my annual review articles. 🎵 Song"Murkit Gem" by El Michels Affair, Piya MalikBe prepared to spontaneously combust in dance. 🎙️ PodcastMy podcast interview with Jakob Greenfeld came out. In it we discussed 5 business ideas, and a very welcome tangent about recommendation algorithms. 📖 BookI just finished "The E Myth Revisited" by Michael E. Gerber. For some reason I always assumed the 'E' was electronic, just as the 'e' in e-mail is. But nope, it stands for Entrepreneur. The format is interesting, in that the author guides a struggling entrepreneur, Sarah, with her baking brick and mortar business called 'All About Pies'.
What's a book you recently finished or started? How has it changed how you view your life? What connections did you make with the ideas in that book? I'm wishing you an eventful week, here's to making things happen.
