Dragons > Ninjas?

Players

Luck happens when preparation meets opportunity. Everyone who comes to the All-Stars tryouts learns more about the process and the expectations, even though only a few will be chosen for a team. So, go ahead and sign up for All-Stars tryouts on Oct 31. Costumes optional.

Parents

Dogs stay home, please! Some children are uncomfortable around dogs, and the conditions of the field permits do not allow dogs at soccer games.

Expect that everyone who participates in winter programs -- All-Stars, Grad Series, and Winter Stars -- will need to be fully vaccinated as soon as it's possible. That will be both shots, plus 2 weeks, for kids 5 and older.

Speaking of which, if you're interested in helping organize Grad Series or Winter Stars, let us know.

Coaches

This week's coach meeting, is on Tuesday from 7:30-8:30. Bring your questions about player ratings!

It's great when all the referees show up. Create some opportunity by confirming your team's referee assignments at https://ayso13.org/games. If you say "No", your game turns red for everyone. You might get lucky and an at-large referee could step up to substitute!

Referees

Join the referee tagup & learning series every Tuesday at 7:30 on Zoom. This week: using your voice, and other communication skills.

Please mark your availability for each game. This year, many kids are learning how to referee. If we are to have a pool of high school student referees in four years, they need 6U-8U opportunities now.

Why do 6U-8U teams have game cards now? These reports help the coach and referee staffs provide oversight of the program. You can return the cards to Victory Park, drop them in the mail slot at the clubhouse, or use the QR code at the bottom to upload pictures. The reports are reviewed by the coach staff for problems, the pandemic team to ensure everyone who participated was cleared to do so, and the referee staff to track credit for advancement.

Pandemic update

If you turn 12 during the season, you'll still need to show a weekly test result until 2 weeks after your last vaccination. You can get a free test every Thursday from 4-8 pm at the AYSO clubhouse, 711 W Woodbury, Unit E, Altadena. There is no need to register, and friends and family are welcome to come test as well. The results come back Friday - in plenty of time for Saturday's game. As an extra bonus, if you test at the Clubhouse you don't need to submit your results to the region as they are sent to us automatically! One less email to send.

Looking ahead

Where did all the dragons come from?

Coaches, please put your team names and colors into your spreadsheet, so they will appear in the online game schedule. Our menagerie is notably lacking in ninjas this year, outnumbered by tigers, blue jays, and even turtles. Where'd all those dragons come from?

The teams with the best* names receive special recognition at the end of the season. The Jelly Jam Cheetahs and Blue Sparkle Dragon Unicorns are off to a good start. You can change your team name up until the end of October.

* best = totally arbitrary selection by a distinguished panel

Wait, is the season half over already?

Will it be hot, or will it rain? Be sure to check  before you head out. Weather updates are posted by 7am on game days.

After 10 weeks of pool play, there's a week off for Thanksgiving and the MST. The week after that, the 10U-14U divisions start a single-elimination playoff tournament. Teams are seeded to play with other teams of comparable ability, so everyone has a good time.

You can keep playing soccer in the winter! Region 13 offers All-Stars for the more advanced players from 10U-14U. For current 8U players, Grad Series is the best program that Region 13 offers. You should do it. Or, if you'd just like to improve your skills while playing soccer with friends on Sunday afternoons, Winter Stars is for you.

Myles Standish Tournament

The MST is a competitive, 3-day tournament on Friday-Sunday after Thanksgiving, right here in Pasadena! AYSO teams from all over SoCal come to compete for bragging rights. Tournament team coaches are already scouting the fields, looking for players to fill out Region 13's teams. To be considered, of course there's a signup form. There are also tryouts, on Nov 3 and 10. Myles Standish is the longtime Region 13 volunteer who first wrote a FORTRAN program to optimize the game schedule so that coaches of multiple teams could survive Saturdays. By the way, Myles would like you to know that he's still alive.

All-Stars

Region 13's All-Star teams will play All-Star teams from the other AYSO regions in Area 1/C, in the West San Gabriel Valley (Arcadia, San Gabriel, Alhambra, Glendale, Temple City, South Pasadena, El Monte, and Boyle Heights). Travel to these cities is required. Games are on Saturdays and Sundays in January and February, including both the MLK and Presidents' Day holiday weekends. Rainouts may be made up on weekday evenings. Practice starts in December, with games from mid-January and through late February, including playoffs. The strongest, or "Sectional" teams may play into March. Coaches will nominate the strongest players, but you still have to apply and try out.
