Last week 1,000 people, many of them Hanover Democrats, turned out on a bitter cold night to protest at the Hanover Board of Supervisors meeting against the proposed ICE detention facility on Lakeridge Parkway. Just as many more wrote or called their supervisors and the Canadian owner of the property to express their disapproval and the opposition organizers were able to generate international media coverage.
As a result, the Supervisors chastised the Trump administration for their handling of this, announced their opposition to using the site for a detention center, and the owner cancelled the pending sale. Activism works. Congratulations Hanover!
