Governor Younkin’s tax proposal (SB632) offers a plan to lower the income tax rate, but increase sales tax for Virginia citizens. It is a brazen plan to benefit the wealthy and ignore the burden it would place on the poor. Progress Virginia estimates that under Youngkin’s plan the bottom 20% of income earners would pay 8.7% of their income in taxes, while the top 1% would pay only 7.2% in taxes.
The sales tax would increase from 4.3% to 5.2%. Increases in sales tax always hurt low income citizens more because the tax is not graduated based on their income, but is a flat tax that must be paid to get basic necessities.
