Hold Republican office holders accountable

During the 2023 election many citizens questioned if Republican Buddy Fowler, then a candidate for the Virginia House of Delegates in the 59th District, actually lived in the district he was running to represent. Sheriff David Hines was asked by the Commonwealth Attorney’s Office to investigate, even though Hines, a Republican, had endorsed Fowler. The documents Fowler submitted for the investigation were unsatisfactory and inconclusive as to Fowler’s actual residence. Although Fowler won the election, the matter of the incomplete investigation remains.

Hanover’s new Commonwealth Attorney Mackenzie Babichenko reportedly told some citizens that she had referred the matter to the Virginia Attorney General. Contact Babichenko at 804-365-3138 or by email at mkbabichenko@hanovercounty.gov to assure her citizens have not forgotten the matter and ask about the status of the investigation.

Follow up with Attorney General Jason Miyares (via Online Form or 804-786-2071 or by mail at: 202 North Ninth, Richmond, VA 23219) to inquire if there is an investigation about Fowlers’s residence and Hines’ handling of his earlier investigation.

Call out hypocrisy

Last week Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-LA) said the quiet part out loud. He acknowledged that House Republicans will refuse to negotiate with Democrats on immigration reform, despite constant Republican outrage about a surge in undocumented immigration. Both Democrats and Republicans understand that the immigration system is broken. In the Senate Republicans are negotiating with Democrats on policy reform, but House Republicans want the system to remain broken so they can use it as a campaign issue against President Biden. To make this cruel hypocrisy even worse, they are refusing to take up measures to provide aid to Ukraine unless their extreme positions on immigration are adopted.

Tell Congressmen Bob Good (202-225-4711 or 434-791-2596) and Rob Wittman (202-225-4261 or 804-730-6595) that you expect Congress to the work of the American people, and that includes a bipartisan effort to reform immigration. Turning immigration into a political cudgel is unacceptable, as is refusing to provide military aid to Ukraine.

Vote!

Yes, Virginia, it is time to vote again! Early voting for the Democratic presidential primary has already begun. President Biden is not the only name on the ticket, so it is important we vote to get the nominee we want and to show enthusiasm for our candidate.

The Hanover Democratic Committee (HDC) has published this Take Action Now (TAN) eblast weekly since November of 2016. Readers have been inspiring in their willingness to take collective political action on local, state, and national issues.

At the January meeting the HDC Executive Committee agreed to adopt a biweekly publication schedule in order to maintain a more sustainable schedule. Politically, we face a difficult year ahead and need to marshal resources so they will be most effective.
