Salut! I've spent the last couple of weeks scuttling around France with my wife, embracing and even kissing the cheeks of friends I haven't seen in over a year. To say that I'm overjoyed is like saying that Monet painted some cool flowers. While it's a true statement, it's also a gross underestimation. Every time I go to France, I have the same observation: Fellow Americans, we may know how to work, but the French know how to live. For example, while so many of us check email after hours, in France, labor law provides its citizens the "right to disconnect." This law makes it illegal for companies with fifty or more employees to email workers outside regular operating hours. Ensuring the workforce is out the door on schedule is a priority before profit, no matter how the client is inconvenienced. American tourists and ex-pats abroad are perpetually confused by French shops closing up, refusing, but really unable to make just one more quick sale. They may seem less motivated to make money, but it’s a matter of perspective and priority. In a country where luxury is defined and perpetually reinvented for the rest of the world, the emphasis on ‘how to live’ over ‘how to work’ is vital and far from lavish. Your finance friend,
