Health Literacy Month

Parent breastfeeding infant.
October is Health Literacy Month – a time when health organizations, literacy programs, libraries, social service agencies, businesses, professional associations, government agencies, and other groups work together to expand the mission of health literacy.

Personal health literacy is the degree to which individuals have the ability to find, understand, and use information and services to inform health-related decisions and actions for themselves and others. Studies consistently show that a lot of people have problems reading, understanding, and acting on health information. This impacts personal health and healthcare resources.

Promoting health literacy improves health outcomes, as well as healthcare safety and quality. At the same time, it reduces health disparities and healthcare costs. Together, we can build a world with greater health equity where all people can attain positive health outcomes.

National Dental Hygiene Month

Taking good care of your teeth can help keep you healthy and feeling good. According to the CDC, millions of Americans suffer from oral diseases, which range from cavities and gum disease to oral cancer, every year.

Follow these tips to protect your oral health:
  1. Brush your teeth at least 2 times every day with a soft-bristled brush
  2. Floss daily
  3. Use mouthwash to remove any food particles that may have been left behind after brushing and flossing
  4. Replace your toothbrush every 3 months
  5. Schedule regular check-ups and cleanings
  6. Avoid using tobacco and tobacco products

National Depression Screening Day

Whether for heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes or depression, health screenings provide a quick and easy way to spot the first signs of serious illness. Major depression is one of the most common mental illnesses, affecting more than 16 million American adults each year.

People suffering from depression often experience some of these key symptoms:
  • A persistent sad, anxious or ""empty"" mood
  • Sleeping too little, early morning awakening, or sleeping too much
  • Reduced appetite and weight loss, or increased appetite and weight gain
  • Loss of interest or pleasure in activities once enjoyed
  • Restlessness or irritability
  • Difficulty concentrating, remembering or making decisions
  • Fatigue or loss of energy
  • Thoughts of death or suicide
Screenings are not a professional diagnosis. Screenings point out the presence or absence of depressive symptoms and provide a referral for further evaluation if needed. You should see your doctor or a qualified mental health professional if you experience five or more of these symptoms for longer than two weeks or if the symptoms are severe enough to interfere with your daily routine.

Halloween Health and Safety

Halloween is a favorite holiday for many kids. Follow these tips to keep everyone healthy and safe during this Halloween season!
  • Plan costumes that are bright and reflective
  • Look for "flame resistant" on the costume labels
  • Consider non-toxic makeup and decorative hats as safer alternatives to masks
  • Never allow small children to carve pumpkins
  • Consider using a flashlight or glow stick instead of a candle to light your pumpkin
  • Always accompany young children while trick-or-treating
  • Only go to homes with a porch light on
  • Never enter a home or car for a treat
  • Give your child a good meal prior to parties and trick-or-treating to discourage filling up on Halloween treats
