No meeting in May, but we are getting together
|
There will be no monthly meeting of the Hanover Democratic Commitee in May due to Mother's Day. Instead, we're having a joint social event with Drinking Liberally at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 29, at Mexico Restaurant. The location is 7162 Mechanicsville Turnpike, Mechanicsville, VA 23111, a little east of the I-295 interchange. And, guess what? The appetizers are on us! Please RSVP so we can get a rough headcount to Katherine Grayson at graysonkatherineq@gmail.com.
Our next meeting will be at 4 p.m. on Sunday, June 8, at Around the Table, 155 Junction Drive, Ashland. It's our annual Pride Month meeting and you'll hear from Kaesey Grayson, our new LGBTQ Caucus Chair with special guest speaker Joel McDonald, chair of the LGBT+ Democrats of Virginia.

Help keep Winsome Earle-Sears accountable
|
The Democratic Party of Virginia needs you to help hold GOP nominee for governor Winsome Earle-Sears accountable.
DPVA is looking for volunteers to meet at a nearby location for an hour or less and participate in small events that might include holding signs, standing alongside press conferences, taking photos, etc., during Sears' events. The goal is to raise awareness about Sears’ record in a respectful and polite way that will ensure coverage of her events includes the whole picture about her record.
We never want to engage with Sears, her campaign or her supporters. For information, contact Maggie at maggie@vademocrats.org.

If you haven't yet, get your REAL ID
|
With all the confusion and attacks on voter identity, please get your Virginia REAL ID as soon as possible, if you don't already have one. It's denoted by the star in the upper corner of your driver's license.
Beginning May 7, the federal government will require you to present a REAL ID compliant driver's license or ID card, or another federally approved form of ID, in order to board a domestic flight or enter a secure federal facility or military base (some military bases may already require REAL ID or a federally approved form of ID). More information here. You can see where this might be headed in the attack on voter ID from the MAGA types.

Early primary voting starts May 2
|
Early voting in the Democratic primary election starts Friday, May 2, and we want you to join us. We'll have a booth on the first day at the Hanover Early Voting Center at the Wickham Building (7497 County Complex Road, 23069).
Come see us that day, grab a special Hanover Dem "I voted" sticker, a bonus treat and a "Vote Democratic" yard sign. Most importantly, VOTE EARLY. Information about the Democratic candidates can be found here and information about early voting in the Democratic Primary can be found here. We have two candidates running for attorney general (Jay Jones and Shanon Taylor) and we have six candidates running for lieutenant governor (Alex Bastani, Ghazala Hashmi, Babur Lateef, Aaron Rouse, Alex Salgado and Levar Stoney).
If you can't come the first day to vote with us, there are 44 more days of early voting. If you vote by mail, mail your ballot or bring it to the absentee ballot drop box at the Hanover Early Voting Center. It is available from May 2 until 7 p.m. on June 17.
In-person early voting runs from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday, starting May 2 and ending at 7 p.m. on Saturday, June 14. Two early voting Saturdays are June 7 and June 14 from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Curbside voting is available during these hours. We also plan to have a booth at the Hanover Early Voting Center on Saturday, June 14. Contact us at info@hvademocrats.com to help.

It's frustrating to read the headlines and watch our country go in the wrong direction. But there is no reason for a feeling of helplessness. There are a lot of things we can do to be seen and heard, and lay the groundwork for our future gains.

Upcoming House of Delegates forums
|
We have two great opportunities to support our House of Delegates candidates,
In the 59th District, Scott "K" Konopasek will be holding a Listening Session at 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 1, at the Ashland Library (201 S. Railroad Ave. in Ashland). He wants to hear directly from you: your hopes, your concern and your ideas for how Democrats can flip the 59th and move Virginia forward. This town hall-style gathering is your chance to share what matters most to you, whether it’s schools, healthcare, jobs or how to push back against extremism and apathy.
In the 60th District, Andrew Ward will be holding a wine and cheese fundraiser at 6 p.m., on Thursday, May 22, at the home of Mary and Bill Butler in the Henry District. Here's how to sign up.

Hanover Democratic Women: Please join us for our May Coffee Caucus meeting. Information will be forthcoming.
All Democratic and like-minded women are invited to our Hanover Democratic Women's Coffees which are for bringing together Democratic women from all parts of Hanover (and sometimes beyond) for energizing fellowship and for forming strong relationships to help elect Democratic candidates and promote our Democratic ideals locally and nationally.
We meet monthly at the homes of different volunteering hostesses and in different parts of the county. We have no formal memberships or dues. Come for great fellowship. We look forward to seeing you. For more information, please contact Diane Neergaard at 804-304-1951 or dianeandallen1@gmail.com.
