Advance Colorado Commends State House for Passage of Senate Bill 23-070

Mandatory school resource officer training promises to strengthen program & ties to community
DENVER– On Wednesday, the Colorado House of Representatives gave its final approval to Senate Bill 23-070. Sponsored by the bipartisan team of Senators Barbara Kirkmeyer (R-Weld) and Chris Kolker (D-Centennial)  and Representatives Mary Young (D-Weld) and Ryan Armagost (R-Larimer, Weld) the bill requires annual training of school resource officers on Colorado’s Safe2Tell system, alongside roles and responsibilities of school resource officers that specifically deviate from standard police training.

Michael Fields, President of Advance Colorado, provided the following statement:

“Our children need to be protected in our schools and these resource officers provide the best line of defense. We applaud Senators Kirkmeyer and Kolker and Representatives Young and Armagost for their willingness to work across party lines to create a training program for the officers that protect Colorado’s schools each and every day.”

The bill now heads to Governor Jared Polis.
