Though replaced in 2004 as Oklahoma’s official state flower, mistletoe remains our “state floral emblem” and real and manufactured versions are brought out this time of year to mark the official Christmas smooch zone in doorways across America. But did you know this hemiparasitic holiday decoration is also a butterfly host plant?

The stunning, albeit slightly misnamed Great Purple Hairstreak lays her eggs exclusively on a variety of mistletoe found throughout the southern United states. Like many other hairstreak butterflies, the GPH utilizes a built-in a decoy tactic to avoid potential head strikes by predators by confusing which end is the actual head. This impressive behavior can by clicking the button below.

Have you seen this beautiful butterfly? Chances are that you were not far from a naturally occurring smooch zone!

Be one of the first to donate $100 or more to secure your limited-edition monarch kaleidoscope bandana designed by Oklahoma’s own muralist, Rick Sinnett. With only 100 bandanas available, your gift will directly fuel efforts our efforts to protect monarch habitats and restore magical monarch kaleidoscopes across our state.

Unfortunately, Oklahomans are seeing less and less kaleidoscopes of monarchs these days. Last year alone, their populations dropped a staggering 59.3%. More. Than. Half. We cannot let their numbers continue to decline, so I invite you to donate at least $100 to help save the imperiled monarch butterfly.

Your donation, no matter the size, will fuel our wings and preserve kaleidoscopes of monarchs for generations to come!

Offer ends December 31, 2024.
