Get ready to Vote Yes

Republicans, at Trump’s insistence, have conducted rare mid-decade redistricting in many red states. They are gerrymandering in order to pick up additional seats in the House of Representatives in the 2026 midterm elections. Californians have already voted to redistrict themselves to counter the Republican move, but Democrats need more states to stop the Republican shenanigans and Virginia is the last, best hope.

Virginia Democrats want the voters to decide if Virginia will redistrict to stop the Republicans. Last week both houses of the General Assembly voted so that the question will come for vote this spring.

Turning out voters for special elections like this requires extraordinary effort, so please be prepared to do your part by understanding the issue and encouraging turnout. Share this video to help others understand what is at stake.

Protect Hanover

The possibility of a 1,500-bed ICE processing detention facility at 11525 Lakeridge Pkwy, Ashland VA was mentioned at the Hanover Board of Supervisors meeting last week. Although that is all we know about this proposal, it would be good to get out in front of it and tell our supervisors we do not want an ICE facility in the county. Explain to them that an increased ICE presence in Hanover will make us all less safe. Contact:

Protest

A. Indivisible Central Virginia sponsors a monthly protest on the first Saturday of every month at the fountain at Ashland Town Hall from 10 am to 11 am. The theme for Febuary 7, in honor of Black History Month, is solidarity with the Black community.

B. Indivisible Central Virginia also will protest at the Caroline Detention Center, 11093 S W Lewis Memorial Drive, Bowling Green on February 15 from 1:30- 3 pm. ICE is using this facility to house detained immigrants and news reports suggest the facility has more detainees than its allowed capacity.

Defund ICE

Congress must pass another funding bill by January 30, which includes money for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), home to Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) and ICE. Recent atrocities, including the killing of Renee Good and the use of aggressive, dangerous tactics to terrorize communities by these agencies, highlight the urgency to block their funding.

Insist that Congressman Rob Wittman (202-225-4261 or 804-730-6595) and John McGuire (202-225-4711 or 804-791-2596) refuse to vote for any funding for DHS until these rogue agencies are disbanded.

Another tactic for “de resourcing” CBP and ICE is to get the companies that are supporting them to stop. You can do this by boycotting, directly contacting the company, giving negative ratings and/or organizing protests.

Some of the companies complicit with ICE are: Hilton, Dell, UPS, FedEx, Motorola Solutions, Comcast, AT&T, LexisNexis, Home Depot, Lowes, Amazon, and Planatir.
