Karen Whitney Candidate for Indiana State House District 28!
Memorial Day is when we pause our busy lives to honor and remember the fallen soldiers who paid for our democracy with their lives.
We can show our appreciation to those who made the ultimate sacrifice by • Registering to vote • Being informed about our government • Voting for politicians who will uphold the basic democratic values of putting people first, with honesty, humility, and service.
Just what is a State Representative?
The Indiana House of Representatives is one of the two chambers in the state's legislative branch, comprising 100 members who serve two-year terms. Each representative is elected from a district within Indiana.
A representative's main responsibilities include: Legislation: Proposing, debating, and voting on bills that can become state laws. This process involves drafting legislation, discussing it in committees, and voting on it in the House chamber.
Constituent Services: Addressing the concerns and needs of residents in their district. This can involve helping constituents navigate state services or advocating on their behalf in state matters.
Budgeting: Participating in the creation and approval of the state budget. This involves decisions on how to allocate state funds to various programs and services.
Oversight: Monitoring the implementation of laws and the operation of state agencies to ensure they are functioning effectively and efficiently.
Representatives work at the Statehouse in Indianapolis and are integral to shaping state policies and laws, ensuring they reflect the interests and needs of their constituents.
In 2024 all 100 seats in the House will be up for election following a shift that saw the Republican majority slightly decrease from 71-29 to 70-30 after the 2022 elections. Indiana currently operates under a Republican trifecta with control over both chambers and the governors office.
Being in Indiana in May, there are many things we like to celebrate and honor, in addition to our military families.
Sunday, May 26th will be the 108th running of the Indy 500, the greatest spectacle in racing! When you hear “Back Home in Indiana,” and of course, the command for the drivers to “Start your engines!” it's the best kickoff to summer!
My family will enjoy these same traditions plus family time, cook outs and some relaxation.
From me and mine to you and yours, Happy Race Day in Indiana!
