DENVER–Following the introduction of House Bill 23-1208, which provides an income tax credit to Colorado teachers in district and charter schools, Advance Colorado's President, Michael Fields, issued the following statement:
“We’re glad to see those on the left finally come around to the idea of providing a tax credit to teachers for the supplies they buy in the classroom. Unfortunately, Colorado teachers could have already gotten back at least $1,500 over the last three years if they had been willing to consider Senator Owen Hill’s original bill, Senate Bill 19-060. The next step should be to make sure more of our current education spending actually gets into classrooms. Currently, only 55% of our education dollars go to 'instruction.' Our teachers and students deserve better.”House Bill 23-1208 is nearly identical to five other bills that have been introduced by conservatives in the legislature over the last five years, including:
Senate Bill 19-060 by Senator Owen Hill (R)
House Bill 20-1125 by Representatives Mark Baisley (R) and Bri Buentello (D)
Senate Bill 20-050 by Senator Rob Woodward (R)
House Bill 22-1126 by Representative Janice Rich (R)
Senate Bill 23-030 by Senator Janice Rich (R)
House Bill 23-1208, sponsored by Representatives Bob Marshall (D) and Matt Soper (R), is currently scheduled to be heard in the
House Education Committee on March 23, 2023.
