REPUBLICAN - PARTY OF THE CONSTITUTION The Republican party was formally founded in 1854 to oppose slavery, four years before Abraham Lincoln was elected President. This was an era when the country was divided. The great divide between the Democrats and the Republicans, at the time, was slavery. The Democrats wanted slavery to continue, and Republicans wanted it to end. It ultimately led to a civil war among the States and Territories but in the end, slavery was abolished, and the 13th Amendment was added to our Constitution. The first Republican Party Platform was written in 1856 and, thankfully, shares many common threads with the current Platform written 160 years later in 2016. Some passages are identical such as the recognition of the Declaration of Independence, that we all have ‘inalienable rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness’ (not found in the Democrat Party Platform). However, The Republican Party of both time periods share grievances with the Democrat lead Government and the state of the nation in their respective times. ‘The right of the people to keep and bear arms has been infringed’ ‘The right of an accused person to a speedy and public trial by an impartial jury has been denied.’ ‘That the freedom of speech and of the press has been abridged.’ ‘Murders, robberies and arsons have been instigated and encouraged, and the offenders have been allowed to go unpunished.’ These are just a few of the grievances addressed in the 1856 Republican Party Platform. Sound familiar? These are much the same grievances we have against the Democrat leadership today. Sadly, not much has changed! But, the ideals of the Republican Party Platform continue to reign true to all who hold our Constitution dear and to all who understand that our Country is worth fighting for. Some of them are as follows: ‘We believe in American exceptionalism.’ ‘We believe that people are the ultimate resource – and that the people, not the Government, are the best stewards of our country’s God-given natural resources.’'As Americans and as Republicans we wish for peace – so we insist on strength. We will make America safe. We seek friendship with all peoples and all nations, but we recognize and are prepared to deal with evil in the world.’ ‘We believe our constitutional system – limited government, separation of powers, federalism, and the rights of the people – must be preserved uncompromised for the future generations.’ ‘This platform lays out – in clear language – the path to making America great and united again.’ The Republican party is rooted in individual freedom with law and order to protect those freedoms, a representative Government for and by the people and pride for the heritage and founding of our Country. Through the passage of time, many have forgotten what we stand for. Some have given up freedom for the false promise of safety and prosperity. Some believe it is owed to them and others believe they have the right to take it. As Americans, we must remember our roots, understand why and how our Country was built, restore pride for our flag and all it stands for and remember that we are a Constitutional Republic! America is the last hope for freedom. If we do not have it here, we cannot find it anywhere. On this battle, there are only two sides. Those who want to rewrite history, allow evil to rule and turn a blind eye to the destruction of our country or those who believe America is worth fighting for and understand that our children and grandchildren will inherit the country we leave behind. As Republicans, it is on us to restore faith and pride in our great Nation and restore a set of ideals and principles that our founding fathers intended America to be. The Democrats want you to believe that America is just an idea. I say “no” America is the greatest nation to ever exist. As Republicans we must act like it, stand for it and most importantly, unite for it!Written by: Katie Kniss, GTGOP County Chair
