GETTING TO KNOW YOUR CANDIDATE

I love the 4th of July. The parades are always fun with folks of all ages and backgrounds creating floats and trailers presenting a particular love for a part of our community.

Parades bring a feeling of community and celebration of what we have in common. As a college president, I walked and drove in my share of parades as a leader of a public university that was deeply dedicated to the region.

This year, I will be in my share of 4th of July and summer parades as a candidate for the State House of Representatives, leading with that same care and dedication to our community.

I recently asked my family what they loved about the 4th of July and, not surprisingly, it was all about food and family.

Eating hotdogs, watermelon, and homemade ice cream. Catching fireflies. Watching fireworks. Flying the flag. Spending time with cousins, aunts, uncles, and grandparents. Stories of good times and good people. Taking a step away from life’s regular routines and just spending time together.

While the parades and picnics are so much fun, the reason for the celebration is our shared love of our country. Every one of us can own the word patriotism.

On this day, no matter who we are and acknowledging we have our differences, we are all together in our celebration of independence from the shackles of abuse and control by imperial England.

And, while we each have our own unique story of coming to this country through migration, immigration, or birth, we have a shared experience of patriotism, of fighting for independence and freedom together to make our country the best it can be.

The 4th, I believe, is a time to celebrate our shared story of being citizens of these United States of America.

As your next Indiana State Representative, please know I will continue our story of restoring and advancing our freedom and independence.

My awesome volunteers will be joining me along with the Hendricks County Democrats at both parades. Come and show your support, and the civic pride you have for your community.

One tradition over the 4th of July is celebrating with fireworks. While they represent “bombs bursting in air” symbolizing our veterans’ heroism, this is just a note that at the same time we all need to thoughtfully consider the safety of others.
