Child Care Action Team to Host Free Child Care Conference Focused on Equity, Development and Community Support
Healthy Sheboygan County’s Child Care Action Team is bringing together early childhood professionals, educators and community members for a day of learning, connection and inspiration at its free upcoming child care conference, titled “Growing Together: Building Strong Foundations for Early Learners” on Saturday, February 28, at the UW–Green Bay Sheboygan Campus.

The conference centers on building stronger, more responsive care systems for children and families. The event will kick off with a keynote presentation by Judge Derek Mosley, nationally-recognized speaker and Director of the Lubar Center for Public Policy Research and Civic Education at Marquette University. Judge Mosley will explore unconscious bias, how it shows up in our everyday interactions and decision-making and what early childhood professionals can do to foster more equitable and inclusive environments for the children and families they serve. His engaging, thought-provoking style is sure to set a powerful tone for the day.

Following the keynote, attendees will choose from a variety of breakout sessions tailored to the needs of today’s early childhood workforce. Session topics will include:
  • Child development and understanding developmental milestones
  • Trauma-informed care and creating emotionally safe learning spaces
  • Engaging children and families in nature
  • Selecting and using developmentally-appropriate books
  • And many other practical, evidence-based topics designed to empower early childhood professionals in their day-to-day work.
The free event aims to not only expand professional skills and aid early childhood educators in meeting their professional development requirements, but also celebrates the vital role early childhood providers play in the health and wellbeing of Sheboygan County families.

Whether you’re a teacher, home-based provider, administrator or community partner, this event offers an excellent opportunity to deepen your knowledge, connect with peers and energize your work.

More details, including registration information and a full session schedule, will be available soon. For additional information or inquiries, please contact Ryan Wilinski, Director of Community Partnership for Children at United Way of Sheboygan County, at ryan@uwofsc.org.

Current Grant Funding Opportunities
Recovery Housing for Transition-Aged Adults
Due December 9, 2025

The Division of Care and Treatment Services is seeking applications for funding to support recovery housing for adults 18-24 who have an opioid and/or stimulant use disorder.

Recovery residences are home-like, residential environments that promote healthy recovery from a substance use disorder and support people recovering from a substance use disorder through the use of peer recovery support.

Recovery housing provides the support needed for young people to transition from adolescence into adulthood with the assistance of services such as peer support, care coordination, and assistance navigating the challenges at this stage of life. Studies suggest that individuals in this age group respond to brief treatment and service models and innovative approaches (Source: Journal of Substance Use and Addiction Treatment). Recovery housing models place an emphasis on choice and self-determination; provide access to voluntary, individualized services and flexible supports; make peer support available while valuing the role of the peer; provide opportunities for social connection; and have a recovery orientation, including support for trauma recovery (Source: SAMHSA). The fourth edition of the American Society of Addiction Medicine’s (ASAM) Continuum of Care, published in October of 2023, added an additional level of care, recovery residence (Source: ASAM Criteria). The addition of this level of care recognizes the importance of a supportive living environment to support clinical services.

Prisoner Reintegration Program
Due December 30, 2025

The Division of Care and Treatment Services is seeking applications for funding to support individuals from Milwaukee County transitioning from prison or jail who face a range of behavioral, social, and economic challenges. Specifically, some of these challenges include but are not limited to substance use, mental health, physical health, social isolation, complex trauma, unemployment, and environmental factors.

The Prisoner Reintegration Program is under Wis. Stat. § 46.48(8). Under this authorization, DHS developed an application process to award funds to organizations to assist individuals reentering Milwaukee County.

Recipients of this funding will provide qualified staff, such as a case manager, certified peer specialist, or both, offering program participants individualized support and assistance with referral to community services. This could include but is not limited to housing, substance use/mental health counseling, employment assistance, transportation, educational, community engagement, health care, and family reunification. The reentry plan may consist of goals and objectives and challenges or barriers to achieve the goals and objectives.
Recipients of this funding must collaborate with prisons and jails to coordinate release dates and meet with program participants within 48 hours of release. The coordination of care with community partners from pre- to post-release increases the likelihood of achieving successful community adjustment, creating prosocial relationships, minimizing substance use, and reducing recidivism.
