Windrush Day – Monday 24th June 10:30-11:15
A special listening room has been arranged to mark Windrush Day. Click here to join.
National Windrush Day was introduced in June 2018 to mark the 70th anniversary of the HMT Empire Windrush ship’s arrival at the port of Tilbury. The ship carried 492 Caribbean migrants, many of them veterans of the Second World War. The ship and its passengers have a symbolic status as the start of the Windrush Generation, which denotes the people who emigrated from the Caribbean to Britain between the arrival of the HMT Empire Windrush on 22 June 1948 and the Immigration Act 1971, including the passengers on the first ship.
Since then, Windrush Day has been celebrated across the country every year on 22nd June to recognise the incredible contribution of the Windrush Generation and their descendants to the UK. The day is about communities coming together to reminisce and share stories and experiences, and to celebrate the national status given to the ongoing legacy of the Windrush Generation, through a day that’s observed not only by Caribbean communities, but by people up and down the country.
