Take Action Now is a biweekly call from the Hanover Democratic Committee

for grassroots action to move our country forward during these exciting times.

Please join us in taking these simple actions on the local, state and national levels.

Vote, Vote, VOTE!

Turnout will determine the outcome of this election and polls show the races to be close. TAN readers have worked so hard on these campaigns, but there is one remaining task … vote yourself and make sure all your like-minded friends have voted.

On Election Day vote at your precinct from 6 am to 7 pm.

The Absentee Ballot drop box is available at the Wickham Building at Hanover Courthouse until Nov 4 at 7 pm.

Not registered to vote? This is not a problem—you can register to vote and submit a provisional ballot on Election Day!

Phone bank to cure ballots

Virginia Democrats will phone bank on Wednesday, November 5th through Friday, November 7 to walk voters through curing their ballots. There are thousands of Virginians who could have their mail-in ballot rejected because of mistakes like a missing signature.

If they are able to fix or "cure" their ballot before November 7th at 12 pm, their vote will still count! You will be contacting these voters to help walk voters through the process and ensure their voices are heard.

Keep calling

Calling our Congressmen every day during the government shutdown down is getting old, but it is much worse for our neighbors who are either furloughed, essential still-working federal employees or federal contractors who are all not getting paid.

Republicans shut down the government because they refuse to fund subsidies for many lower income citizens enrolled in the Affordable Care Act. Premiums will jump up to 50% meaning that many will no longer be able to afford their health insurance. It is unconscionable to throw people off of health care coverage while giving billionaires tax cuts, bailouts to Argentina, and building extravagant ballrooms.

In a cruel and sadistic twist, Trump is also refusing to fund SNAP benefits that feed millions of Americans even though an emergency fund exists to do just that. Although the matter may get resolved in court, the food insecurity Trump’s decision triggers causes unnecessary pain for beneficiaries.

Call Congressmen Rob Wittman (202-225-4261 or 804-730-6595) and John McGuire (202-225-4711 or 434-791-2596) everyday during this shutdown to remind them that the shutdown is hurting Virginians and Virginia’s economy. Tell them to get back to work to negotiate a solution that includes the Affordable Care Act subsidies and back pay for all employees. Emphasize that you blame Republicans for this mess and are upset that our Congressmen’s communications to us lie about the causes.

Catch your breath

Hopefully, there will be lots to celebrate on November 4, but it is still important in this anxiety-producing era that we take care of ourselves physically and emotionally. We are already hearing about the work needed for the midterm election next year, but first, take a deep breath and decide what you need to take care of yourself.

Although this guide is from our good Canadian neighbors and their political stress seems considerably less than ours, it still has good guidance for getting through these times.
